Semaglutide

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, it is a synthetic version of the natural GLP-1 hormone found in the body. GLP-1 is released by the intestines in response to food intake.

GLP-1 Receptor Agonist:

Semaglutide mimics the action of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone produced in the gut that helps regulate blood sugar levels. GLP-1 is released in response to food intake and stimulates insulin secretion from the pancreas, which helps lower blood sugar levels.

How does Semaglutide work?

Increased Insulin Production:

By activating the GLP-1 receptors, semaglutide increases insulin secretion from the pancreas in response to elevated blood sugar levels. This helps to lower blood sugar levels after meals.

Inhibition of Glucagon Release:

Semaglutide also inhibits the release of glucagon, another hormone produced by the pancreas. Glucagon normally increases blood sugar levels by promoting the release of glucose from the liver. By inhibiting glucagon release, semaglutide helps to reduce blood sugar levels.

Slowing of Gastric Emptying:

GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide can also slow down the emptying of the stomach contents into the small intestine. This delay in gastric emptying can help to reduce postprandial (after-meal) blood sugar spikes.

Appetite Suppression:

Semaglutide has been found to have an effect on reducing appetite and promoting satiety, which can aid in weight loss. This effect on appetite regulation is thought to occur through its action on the central nervous system.
